Bottom of the league Glenross Juniors put up a brave fight against Trawden Celtic at the Rec.
Some good saves, bad finishing and the woodwork kept the score down to 4-0. The final score could have been 10-3!
Manager Dave Whitfield had 14 players at his disposal and decided to swap Richard Dixon to the right wing with Iain Ross going on the left. Liam Britton and Spencer Jordan played in the middle as usual. Phil Shaw and Ollie Slater played up front and the back four returned to the usual line-up of Carl Pain, Chris Dodd, Callum Whitfield and Thomas Farthing, with Ben Gorman in goal.
The subs were Declan Pinder, Thomas Ellacott and Calvin Anslow. Simon Lawson is injured and James Brookes is still AWOL!
Celtic went ahead in the first minute when man-of-the-match Liam Britton tried his luck from the edge of the box. The Glenross ‘keeper seemed to have the ball covered, but let the ball slip through his grasp.
Ten minutes later, Skipper Callum Whitfield, back in his central defensive role after scoring a hat-trick as a striker last week, made it 2-0 with a great shot on the turn from the edge of the box.
It was one way traffic, with Glenross’ attempts being snuffed out by Celtic’s well organised defence. However, Trawden, playing some of their best football of the season, wasted some good chances until a great header by Iain Ross put them 3-0 up just before the break.
The first five minutes of the second half saw Celtic firing on all cylinders and they hit the bar three times!
This didn’t deter Glenross though as they started to take advantage of the gaps that Trawden left in midfield. Only some bad luck, bad finishing and some competent keeping from Ben Gorman prevented them from pulling a goal back.
The match started to peter out, but another Glenross chance lead to Trawden's fourth goal two minutes from time.
The Glenross striker rounded Ben Gorman but Calvin Anslow on as a sub, anticipated this and cleared the ball off the line straight to Liam Britton who played a great first time ball to Spencer Jordan who finished with a cool shot into the bottom corner to give the ‘keeper no chance and make the final score 4-0.
